Perry is a Chicago native, born to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Two of her earliest television appearances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the role. However, her parents did not let her perform until she reached the age of adulthood, for fear of the effects stress would affect their child. Perry said she felt shy to act during high school, but started doing shows in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer from Boston University. Perry moved to New York, where she was offered small roles in shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Home sickiness caused Perry back to California which was where theatre jobs were available. Perry starred with her mother on stage in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. The father of her Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer prize-winning film Anna Christie together with her in the year 2015. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family. In 2017, Perry had an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal alongside her father. She played the role of an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. The role was given to her through audition, regardless of the fact that she was a cousin with the role.
